Public Awareness of and Interest in the Paralympics in Japan and Overseas Following the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Report on the Results of the Third Survey
The Paralympic Research Group previously conducted two social surveys (in 2014 and 2017) focusing primarily on public awareness of and interest in the Paralympics, intentions to volunteer at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and expectations for the Tokyo Games.
In October 2021, following the Tokyo Paralympic Games, the third survey was conducted as a joint research project between the Paralympic Research Group and the Makoto Kobori Laboratory, School of Global Studies and Collaboration, Aoyama Gakuin University. The survey aimed to clarify changes in awareness of and interest in the "Paralympics," approval or disapproval and evaluations of the Games, the impact of COVID-19, the social impact of hosting the Paralympics domestically, and interest in future Paralympic-related activities.
Purpose of the Survey
- To clarify public awareness and perceptions of the Paralympics after the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, including the social value perceived in the Tokyo Paralympic Games (hereafter, the Tokyo Paralympic Games).
- To identify trends in each country regarding viewership of the Tokyo Paralympic Games and expectations for the Paralympics through international comparison.
Through the above, the survey aims to clarify public evaluations of the Tokyo Paralympic Games and to provide basic data for future promotional activities.
Responses were collected online from men and women aged 20 to 69 who are registered as survey monitors with a major domestic research company and its overseas partner companies. A total of approximately 8,000 responses were obtained from seven countries--Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, and Brazil (5,000 respondents in Japan and approximately 500 respondents in each overseas country).
